AmeriCorps in Action

Reading Corps, Math Corps and Early Learning Corps are evidence-based AmeriCorps programs. We partner with schools across the country to provide tutors and extra help for students.

Our goal is to ensure every student is reading proficiently by 3rd grade and ready for algebra by the end of 8th grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

AmeriCorps, often called the “domestic Peace Corps,” is an opportunity to make a big difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. It’s a chance to apply your skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.

Each year, AmeriCorps provides opportunities for 75,000 Americans to give back to their communities and country through dedicated national service. Since its creation in 1994, more than one million Americans have served their communities through the AmeriCorps program.

Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you’re 18 or 85+, your most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed! That said, it’s important that you meet the following minimum qualifications by the beginning of your service:

  • Be 18 years or older two weeks before the program start date
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Be willing and able to successfully complete a background check

We believe everyone has something to give back and that our communities are stronger when everyone is welcome to contribute. Reading Corps and Math Corps will not discriminate for or against any service member or applicant on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, or age.

  • You can search for opportunities near you using the search bar at the top of this page. The need is great and we’re continuing to grow, so if there isn’t something near you today, be sure to check back soon.

Yes! Federal regulations currently allow individuals to serve a total of four terms with an AmeriCorps state or national program. If you have already served four terms, you aren’t eligible to serve with Reading Corps/Math Corps at this time, but could choose to serve with a Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) or National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) program.
